Towing an Electric Vehicle
EVs can be towed, but must be handled carefully to avoid drivetrain or electronics damage.
- Flatbed Tow: Most U.S. manufacturers recommend a flatbed tow truck to lift the car completely off the ground.
- Neutral Mode: Many EVs lack a true mechanical neutral; even in tow mode, wheels may still be linked to motors.
- Fully Discharged: Some EVs require minimal charge to disengage the parking brake or enable tow mode. If the battery is 0%, special procedures may be needed.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions or call roadside assistance. Improper towing can void the warranty.
