Can an EV be towed if it breaks down or the battery is fully discharged?

Towing an Electric Vehicle

EVs can be towed, but must be handled carefully to avoid drivetrain or electronics damage.

  • Flatbed Tow: Most U.S. manufacturers recommend a flatbed tow truck to lift the car completely off the ground.
  • Neutral Mode: Many EVs lack a true mechanical neutral; even in tow mode, wheels may still be linked to motors.
  • Fully Discharged: Some EVs require minimal charge to disengage the parking brake or enable tow mode. If the battery is 0%, special procedures may be needed.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions or call roadside assistance. Improper towing can void the warranty.
