Can an EV be towed (e.g., by a tow truck) if broken down or fully discharged?

Towing an Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles (EVs) can be towed, but it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the drivetrain or electronics.

  • Flatbed Recommended: Most EV manufacturers recommend using a flatbed tow truck to completely lift the vehicle off the ground. This prevents the wheels from turning, which could otherwise damage the electric motor or gearbox.
  • Neutral Mode Limitations: Unlike traditional cars, EVs often lack a true mechanical “neutral.” Even if a tow mode is available, it may not fully disconnect the drivetrain.
  • If Fully Discharged: Some EVs require minimal battery power to disengage the parking brake or shift into tow mode. If completely dead, special procedures or manual releases may be needed.

Important Tips

Always consult the owner's manual or contact roadside assistance for proper towing instructions specific to your EV model. Improper towing can void warranties or cause costly damage.
