Typical EV Top Speeds
Most EVs have a top speed between 90–130 mph, with performance models exceeding 155 mph. Some supercars can go well over 200 mph.
What Limits Top Speed?
- Software Caps: Manufacturers often electronically limit speed to protect range and safety.
- Motor & Inverter Limits: Hardware can only handle certain RPM and power levels.
- Gear Ratios: Single-speed gearboxes are tuned for acceleration and efficiency, not maximum speed.
- Aerodynamics: Drag increases exponentially at high speeds, requiring far more power.
- Battery Output: Sustained high speeds draw large amounts of current, causing heat buildup.
