What is the difference between curb weight and gross vehicle weight (GVWR)?

Curb Weight

The total weight of the vehicle with standard equipment, all fluids, and a full charge — but without passengers or cargo.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

The maximum safe weight of the vehicle including:

  • Curb weight
  • Passengers
  • Cargo
  • Optional equipment
  • Tongue weight from a trailer

Exceeding GVWR can reduce safety, braking, and handling performance.

Why It Matters

Knowing these numbers helps avoid overloading, which can cause excess wear or safety risks.
